Hong Kong is one of APAC's safest e-commerce markets

Hong Kong is one of the safest environments in APAC for online shopping, with fewer than 5% of buyers having fallen victim to fraud, an international survey indicates.

The survey from PayPal and market research partner GfK also shows that 75% of Hong Kong online shoppers reported never encountering problems with lost or damaged goods.

Nine in ten Hong Kong shoppers make purchases online at least once per month, and around 20% do so at least once per week. A majority (60%) also indicated they use mobile devices to buy things online at least once per month.

Despite the low actual incidents of fraud, 56% of respondents listed fraud as a concern while shopping online, and 65% feel safer shopping online if there are reputable methods of payment.

Hong Kong shoppers are also more likely to trust domestic online stores, with 83% stating that they feel more concerned when shopping on international sites. But shoppers feel comparatively safer buying digital rather than physical goods from overseas.

"Hong Kong consumers are feeling more confident to go online for their shopping and financial needs," PayPal vice president for Asia Pacific merchants services Lawrence Chan commented.

"This developing sense of comfort is likely in response to Hong Kong's online environment becoming safer overall."
