The South Australian government has recorded a decrease in crime levels, thanks to its updated Crime Mapper website.
SA Attorney-General, John Rau, said the website, which was launched by the Office of Crime Statistics and Research (OSCAR) on Friday, allows citizens to access data about crime in their local area.
“The new website is easier to use and has crime statistics arranged by local government area (LGA),” Rau said in a statement. “The new version also has the advantage of providing five-year trend data for each LGA on a single page.
“The overall picture on crime statistics shows a steady and continuing drop in crime since the Rann government was elected in 2002.”
The website has shown a drop of 20 per cent in crime levels from 2005 to 2009 across the state, with Rau saying that resources can now be better allocated thanks to the information on the website.
“While we must always remain vigilant, the community can feel assured that we can make significant gains in the fight against crime with the right approach and resources.”
The South Australian government also introduced mandatory real-time reporting of the sale of pseudoephedrine in July this year, and recorded an increase of 14 per cent in online car registration renewals.
