Infosec keen uni students face April 1 deadline for (ISC)2 scholarships

Future information security professionals keen to enhance their skills have until April 1 to apply for a number of scholarships being offered by information security peak body (ISC)2 and available to recipients worldwide.

The scholarships – which include Women's, Undergraduate, and Graduate categories as well as the Harold F. Tipton Memorial Scholarship, USA Cyber Warrior Scholarship, and University of Phoenix (ISC)2 Scholarships – have different eligibility requirements but are generally open to university students pursuing an information assurance or cyber security focus.

Students must be currently enrolled at a regionally accredited university and be seeking an associates, bachelor or graduate degree. They must also commit to following the (ISC)2 Code of Ethics.

Corporate support, from the likes of Booz Hamilton and the University of Phoenix, has expanded the program significantly in recent years: the USA Cyber Warrior Program, for one, is designed to help US military veterans transitioning from active duty to civilian careers in information security.

The programs also support those entering the information security industry for the first time: Ugandan recipient Innocent Barigye, for example, received an (ISC)2 Foundation Scholarship to support his studies towards the Masters of Information Technology (Security) degree at Kampala's Makerere University.

“My interest in information security started as I enrolled for my undergraduate course and I realized that many people have not taken information security very seriously,” he said in a statement. “There are very few information security experts in my country, and I want to be one of the best security experts in the country since information security is my major interest now.”

The 24 recipients of last year's scholarships came from around the globe, with non-USA winners spanning Albania, Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Taiwan, Thailand, Uganda, and the United Kingdom.

Applications close on 1 April at midnight US Eastern Standard time (2 April at 4pm Australian Eastern Daylight Time). Click here for detailed application information.
