While the world's focus on Apple today might be on the release of its new streaming music service, the company also pushed out a host of security fixes for exploits, flaws, and--shall we say--politically difficult situations of the last few months. iOS 8.4 and OS X 10.10.4 should make users safer, pending testing by outside researchers.

The web security exploit known as FREAK that I discussed last week was patched by Apple days after it was discovered two weeks ago. FREAK relied on a configuration issue in web servers combined with a flaw for backwards compatibility in many software libraries used to create a secure connection. But the patch only affected Apple's operating systems--not all apps.

On Monday Apple issued a security update for Mac OS X Mountain Lion, Mavericks, and Yosemite that fixes a "critical security issue with the software that provides the Network Time Protocol service on OS X." Recommended for all users, Software Update suggests that you install the update as soon as possible. Details are currently unavailable, but Apple should issue them on the Apple Security Updates page shortly.
